Dr. Smith, professor of English and director of Winthrop's Writing Center, earned all three of her degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. At Winthrop, she has taught primarily writing classes: first-year composition, the non-fiction creative essay, composition pedagogy, tutoring pedagogy, and rhetorical theory.
Most of Smith's research involves ways to understand the act of writing and how the context in which people write affects their abilities to write confidently and well. Her scholarship tends to focus on ways to improve both the teaching and tutoring of writing. These interests led to her co-editing a book with Kathleen Blake Yancey entitled Student Self-Assessment and Development in Writing (2000) and editing another book, The Elephant in the Classroom: Race and Writing (2010). She also writes and publishes poetry.
